How to turn your fabric stash into a fabric library!

I honestly can't remember where I came across this a few years ago. It's genius. I wanted to share it with those of you who might have an unruly stash of fabric plotting to eat you in your sleep. Fabric should be put in its place! *whip crack* All you need are comic book back boards (available at your local comic book store!) and T pins. They really do work best.

I tilted the front row down so you can see the Ikea shelving allows two rows ! Lots of storage!

Here we go:

This works best with at least half a yard. Anything smaller can go with your fat quarters or scraps. I'm working on a better fat quarter storage system, I'll keep ya posted.

Fold your fabric selvedge to selvedge

Next, take your comic book backer board and place it at the edge, folding the fabric around it in thirds like so:

Fold it all til you reach the end of your yardage!

Dogear the corners, then pin with a T pin. Watch out, those suckers hurt like a mofo!! Ask me how I know.....

Repeat...repeat....repeat...repeat.... *get a biiiiig glass of wine* repeat...repeat...repeat.....

There you go! You now have a beautiful, inspiring library of fabric you can peruse at a glance!

Oooooh.......aaaaaahhhh......

  1. What a great idea--my fabric is all in big storage tubs--so I end up buying new yardage even though I already have what I need on hand...I'd love to be able to see everything at once!

  2. I totally hear ya, Sam! I have some doubles of fabric too for the exact same reason. It seems to take up much less space is way too! And who doesn't love to glance over at their fabric library with all its beautiful colors and go "sigh.....that's so pretty. I think I shall make something!"

  3. This is great! Thanks for letting me know about your clever idea.

PS I love your social media buttons that look like a pennant. Can I ask where you found them?

  4. Aren't they cool? There's a free tutorial at http://leeloublogs.blogspot.com/2011/07/free-social-network-icons.html#comment-form She outlines every step so it's totally easy to understand. :)

  6. Thank you, thank you! I desperately needed to take control of my man-eating fabric piles. I loved this idea; looks like a quilt shop on the shelves. I wanted to get 'er done ASAP and fit the fabric into my custom built shallow cabinets, so I designed my own cardboard holders and cut them to size. Yaaaaaay, success! I could just stand there admiring it. If you do come up with a good way for stashing remnants and fat quarters, I'd love to hear. Thanks!

  7. i love the storage idea of useing comic boards for bolt boards (andthe guys at syfy world now known as ledgends, my comic and game shop love it to because it brings me in there more since i stoped going a while back), but instead of putting them in a bookself i'm useing a tub, simply because i'm a graphic designer by trade and my shelves are already taken up with tons of books. lol :) thanks for the idea
